USDT (Tether) is a U.S. dollar stablecoin first launched in 2014, making it the oldest and by far the largest stablecoin by market capitalization. It is issued by Tether Operations Limited and designed to trade at one dollar.
USDT is the deepest source of dollar liquidity in crypto. It dominates trading pairs on exchanges and is widely used for payments and remittances, particularly on the Tron network in emerging markets where access to dollars is limited.
How USDT is backed
Tether says each USDT is backed by reserves that include cash and cash equivalents, with a large allocation to short-dated U.S. Treasuries. Tether publishes quarterly attestations of its reserves prepared by the accounting firm BDO.
Historically Tether's reserve transparency drew scrutiny, and it does not provide a full audit to the standard of some peers. Reserve quality and disclosure remain the key things to monitor for any treasury team holding USDT.
Chains and availability
USDT is issued across many blockchains, including Tron, Ethereum, Solana, and others. Tron and Ethereum carry the largest USDT supply, with Tron favored for low-cost transfers and remittances.
What USDT is used for
