On-Chain Stablecoin Volume Rivals the Major Card Networks

Adjusted stablecoin transfer volume now sits in the same league as global card networks, according to Artemis data, a structural shift in how value moves.

Stablecoins are no longer a crypto-native curiosity. Adjusted annual transfer volume, filtering out bots and internal shuffling, now puts stablecoins in the same conversation as the world’s largest card networks.

The structural shift

Three forces are compounding:

  1. Cross-border payouts. Businesses use stablecoins to pay suppliers and contractors without correspondent-banking delays.
  2. FX efficiency. Dollar exposure is available instantly in markets where local USD access is scarce or expensive.
  3. 24/7 settlement. Money moves on weekends and holidays, collapsing float.

The takeaway for finance leaders: stablecoins have crossed from speculation into settlement infrastructure.

Why the headline number needs context

Raw on-chain volume overstates real economic activity, because a single dollar can be moved many times by market makers, bots, and automated strategies. Adjusted volume strips out that noise to approximate genuine payments and transfers. Even on that conservative basis, the trend is unmistakable: the value settled in stablecoins has scaled into the trillions per year.

Comparing it to card networks is not perfectly like-for-like. Card volume is overwhelmingly consumer retail spend, while stablecoin volume skews toward larger transfers, treasury movements, and crypto settlement. The point is not that stablecoins have replaced cards, but that they now operate at a comparable order of magnitude, which would have been unthinkable a few years ago.

What it means for treasury teams

For a CFO, the signal is that the rails are mature enough to build on. Liquidity is deep, the largest issuers are increasingly regulated, and tooling for payments, custody, and reconciliation has caught up. The practical next step is a ring-fenced pilot, such as a single cross-border payout corridor, measured against the cost and speed of the existing bank wire.
