Western Union's Stablecard Goes Live, Powered by Rain

Western Union’s Stablecard is live. Remittances can now be received in USDPT and spent instantly anywhere Visa is accepted, across 175 million merchant locations worldwide. It is one of the clearest signals yet that stablecoins are reshaping the $100B-a-year remittance business, and it is powered end to end by Rain’s stablecoin infrastructure.
What launched
- Stablecard is live in 37 markets, with Western Union targeting 60+ by the end of the year.
- USDPT is Western Union’s own stablecoin, issued by Anchorage Digital on Solana.
- Rain powers the full stack: the Stablecard mobile app, embedded wallets, and card issuing all run on Rain’s infrastructure.
- The app is live on Google Play and the App Store, with cards enabled on Apple Pay and Google Pay.
Physical cash is now optional
For most of its 175 years, receiving a Western Union transfer meant walking into a location, showing ID and a transfer number, and leaving with cash. Now money can arrive digitally as USDPT, funding a Stablecard issued instantly. Recipients can still cash out at any Western Union location, but they can also hold US dollar stablecoins in the app and spend them at more than 175 million merchants, online or in store. For many recipients, it is their first access to digitally native financial services.
Why it matters for Western Union
Traditional remittances run on prefunding: capital parked in bank accounts around the world days before it is needed, because correspondent banking does not run on nights, weekends, or holidays. Stablecoins attack that cost from both ends. Dollars that stay in the app never need to be prefunded, and when someone does want cash, USDPT settles in seconds, any hour of any day. Capital can follow demand instead of a forecast.
Expansion also gets cheaper. A traditional card program can take three to six months of local setup per market. Rain’s single integration, with licensing and issuing already in place, lets Western Union launch markets all at once and test new ones with marketing spend rather than months of operational lift.
The scale behind the move
Western Union is a 175-year-old company that moves more than $100B a year across 200+ countries and territories to over 100 million customers. Rain is a Visa Principal Member whose cards already work in more than 200 countries, with licensing, issuing, and compliance built for global institutions.
“Stablecard represents the next step in making global financial services more accessible to our customers,” said Devin McGranahan, President and CEO of Western Union. “Rain was built for exactly this: enterprise-grade rails with compliance and consumer protections in from the start,” added Farooq Malik, CEO and co-founder of Rain.
The takeaway
This is how $100B a year for 100 million customers starts moving onchain. When a 175-year-old remittance giant routes payouts through a stablecoin and a Visa card, stablecoin spending stops being a crypto-native experiment and becomes mainstream financial plumbing.
